Hi:

I cut back my running to 3 times a week (1 longer run on weekends, 2 short ones on weekdays) in the winter, from 4-5 times per week in the warmer months. This helps me maintain fitness.

I don't try to improve times or mileage when it's cold and dark out, although I do try to see some improvement on my weekend run, since it's a late-morning run with the best conditions. But I keep my expectations low, regardless. When spring comes, I'm ready to start challenging myself.

CrazyB, I've had Yaktrax, and they break down very quickly. I would recommend either slip-on cleats (http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/SUR003/) or Ice Spikes (http://www.icespike.net/). You can make your own studded shoes, too, just use an older pair of shoes:

Last years winter was my first time and I did cut mileage down in half, as well as how often I went out. But I did go out when it was -20*C and in snowstorms bc I love running so much. This winter I"m hoping that there will not be a decline whatsoever bc I picked up these things called Yaktraks to minimize sliding on ice, that was the only real obstacle that I had last year.

I went out all winter last year bc I wanted to be in prime condition for spring, it's natural that you're not going to be able to do as much as when it's great weather but you do what you can, when you can.

Happy Running!

I say the average to run in the summer should be around 3-5 days.
Although some people prefer not to run in the winter because of the deep snow and the cool conditions. If you want to run in the winter, try wearing warm clothes like a sweater, a coat, a scarf, mittens and a hat. When you run in the winter, wear winter running shoes. If they dont have any, pic a shoe that keeps your foot warm and comfortable and has a good grip.
Remember to stay warm during the winter. I hope this helps. : )
