Which burns more calories? Sprinting a total of 5 miles or continuously running 5 miles?

Question from Righteous Indignation

We had a question come up during track practice once and didn’t have an answer as to who burns the most calories:
A) A long distance runner who, during practice, runs 5 miles nonstop.
B) A sprinter who runs various distances (100 m, 200m, etc) for a total of 5 miles.

Assuming they are of equal weight, height, gender and physical fitness who burns the most calories? This isn’t a riddle, I’m just curious.
