What do you think of Jim Plunkett as a QB ?

Plunkett won the H – MAN trophy, was in shape, could throw, could run, won 2 Super Bowls. He had all around skill and passing – fitness – and running. Do you think he is underrated. He should be promoted more, because he won Rings, and could and did it all. What is your take ?

I was a kid then. In that era he was good but his team(raiders) made him good. He wasn’t all that when he was with New England though.
He was on good teams, that doesn’t make him great. Compare him with some of the QBs before him, and he seems OK, but compare him with some of the guys who were young when he was still playing, and no wonder we don’t remember him.
He won the Heisman in 1971. He was part American Indian and his parents were blind newspaper vendors. What a great story in itself. He goes to the NFL, ends up with the Raiders and, as you pointed out, won two Super Bowls. Never played in a Pro-Bowl but I doubt he regrets that. Also, from what I know, he is approachable-something very, VERY rare in the NFL today.
He deserves more credit than he gets. Not many Quarterbacks have won two superbowls let alone one.
Honestly, what I remember most about Jim Plunkett as a kid was the fact that it looked like they poured him into that helmet.
Plunkett was a great college quarterback, but didn’t reach that same level in the pros. While he did win Super Bowls, I’m not sure that anyone thinks he was the major cog in the Raider machine, as Peyton Manning was with the Colts last season.
However, Plunkett obviously did more than stay out of the way. So, it’s fair to say he is a bit underrated as a pro. Hall of Fame person, from what I understand.
Jim Plunkett was an excellent QB once he got to the Raiders. He should be in the hall of fame, but a Raider is held to a higher standard than other players.
I didn/t follow Plunkett while he was in the Pros. but did in college. He threw the most amazing passes; 60 or 70 yards on a rope with as tight a sprial you’ll ever see hitting his WR in stride running down the sideline. I think the fact he is an AI had something to do with his lack of promotion by the historians. Being an AI QB in those days (during the AIM uprisings; wounded knee etc…) garnered about as much respect as being an AA QB. And, some guys seek the limelight and get it; Plunkett seemed to shy away from it.
I wouldn’t say he was underrated. He enjoyed a great resurrection in his career. Very rare for quarterbacks. Plunkett started of pretty well in New England the first three seasons of his career. But injuries, interceptions, poor play sent him to the sidelines and was traded to San Francisco. It wasn’t any better there. For some reason he got it back in Oakland and played very well there to close out his career.
The equivalent to Plunkett might be if Kerry Collins were to sign with a team and somehow earn the starting job. And then put together five solid seasons and win two Super Bowls. I know that sounds unlikely, but that’s what Plunkett was able to do in the late 70′s.
Jim Plunkett was awesome.He was great at every level.
He was the silent leader on a team of rebels and outcasts.
The old Raiders teams were special.He was rookie of the year.Hiesman trophy winner, Super Bowl MVP.What more can you do???
the guy is a class act in every sense of the word. we need more guys like him and less TO’s and Mosses.
at the time he won the heisman he was the best qb around and went in the draft correctly unfortunately he had no players around him until he got to the raiders and that’s when he showed his real talent he should and will be a hall of famer
When he was with the Patriots back in the early 70′s, he stunk as much as the Patriots did. The Raiders brought out the best in him and he ended up being a pretty good QB. I thought Kenny Stabler was better though.
