How far should an adult of average fitness and size be able to hit a baseball?

Question from Aaron
We were at the local ball field trying to play home run derby and no of us could get the ball over the 300 foot fence. Do we suck or does it take someone special to hit a ball that far? We all played baseball in high school so we aren’t total scrubs, but I was surprised that we couldn’t hit it out of this little park..

I’m surprised that you couldn’t hit it out. 300 feet is pretty close for baseball, especially if you are specifically trying to hit home runs. I am an average sized adult (about 5’10” 190 lbs) and played a little bit of varsity baseball while I was in high school. I know for a fact that i could hit a ball well over 300 feet, so maybe you guys do just suck. Sorry haha.
Were you throwing full speed pitches or were you just lobbing the ball? The speed of the pitch has a lot to do with how far it goes.
But also, if you haven’t played in a while it takes time to be able to hit balls 300 feet again.
An average adult should easily be able to hit a baseball a good 2 or 3 miles.
How often does the adult of average fitness and size in question swing the bat? Practice and technique have as much to do with going yard as being in shape. You can’t really say that a person in Size and Shape X should hit it this far, Size and Shape Y this far, and so on.
