How do I build up my stamina for running long distance and fast?

Question from Lily -

I am starting running as of last week. I have so far ran 15 mins without stopping, but I was rather slow. How shall I build my stamina and fitness to be quicker and be able to run a longer distance.
I am 14 years old.
7 and half stone.
I play about 4-5 hours of sport a week.

Please help. My goal to do this is by summer-ish time.
Thank you for any tips or hints.

  1. How much you can increase your stamina in several weeks is individual but IS very possible for most everyone. I suggest running very slow (jog) and rather than keeping track of distance, keep track of time. Start with the 15 minutes you are capable of and increase by 3-5 minutes every day. When you get to 40 – 45 minutes of non stop SLOW minutes of running – continue jogging daily for that time frame but add terrain (hills, grassy parks, trails).
Most aerobic sports will increase stamina – especially soccer (football) but running is my “game” so there you have it… GOOD LUCK!
