Eat Spaghetti or something high carb and drink 1 glass of choclate milk the night before. Also drink tons of water leading up to and after the race.

Spaghetty- Energy
Milk- necascarry protein and fat to heal up muscles while you sleep

Well, now if it's a mile as indicated by your question you really should not have any problem as long as your somewhat fit.
I would suggest that you do some leg stretches (try to touch your toes and hold that for about 60 seconds, repeat 2-3 times. Do not stretch so far down that it hurts.)
Now all you got to do is jog for a mile. I do mean that! Just go out at the fastest comfortable pace you can manage. I imagine that your doing this as a group. Look for someone who's going at your pace and buddy up. Encourage each other to catch people that are running in front of you. If you keep trying to move up; you'll end up running faster and it will actually keep you motivated. And remember this; every step you take brings you nearer to the finish and if your getting tired you may slow down but try not to walk, keep moving.
Good luck! I'm sure you'll do fine. I'm 50 yo and I can run a mile in way under 10 mins.!
