Do I need to lift weights to get/look fit? Or will running and swimming do?

Many commentators say that weight lifting/strength training is important for fitness. Can I get fit and look fit from just running and swimming? Or do I have to do strength training to look lean and toned?

    Swimming is one of the best exercises in the world. You will look really great after six months of swimming regularly 4 times a week.
