Haha this is an interesting question.

I don't think a modern average human could chase down and kill a cow, when society was much more primitive, and life in general was harder, they probably could, because they were in better shape.

But I think that to kill a cow, even if you were able to chase it around, i don't think that would be a very efficient way to kill. It would be better to sneak up on them, possibly in a rain storm or while they were sleeping eating or drinking. I don't know so much about wild bovines, but domesticated cattle very stupid, they don't even notice you if you're sneaky.

I think that I could kill a cow, but probably not by chasing it.

Have you ever tried to catch a chicken though? It's really not that easy. You have to sneak up on them after dark, while they're sleeping.

Do you mean a wild cow, or a feral cow?

The wild relative of the cow was known as the aurochs, and they were considerably meaner and tougher than their domestic relatives. They could be close to 7 feet at the shoulder, and had longer, forward pointing horns that could easily gore a human.

Also to take into consideration - cows are herd animals, and will act to protect their herd mates.

The average modern human, with little or no skill in killing critters with spear or knife would probably fare poorly in a match against an aurochs.

A feral cow - that is, a domestic cow that has somehow escaped and is now living in the wild, might be a bit easier. Again, if it is running in a herd of other feral cows, a direct assault might not be the wisest idea.

Fortunately, humans, even modern ones, are clever enough that we don't have to take the direct assault. One on one in a straight fight, we probably wouldn't stand a chance. But, we can fight dirty. Humans are pack animals too, and with the help of a few buddies, even the laziest Wal-Mart shopper can take down a herd of cows. One easy method would be utilizing a similar tactic to that utilized by many Plains tribes when hunting bison, horses or other herd critters - the pushkin or buffalo jump.

Get a herd to stampede off a cliff by startling them, and you can have your pick of steaks, chops, leather and horn to work with. It may take a whole tribe days or weeks just to process all the food you collect with this method. You don't even need the spear and knife - just some planning, tactics, proper ground for the engagement, communication, and it's suppertime!!

Forget about catching, you can hardly kill a wild cow even with a machine gun. I am serious, I don't mean you personally but even people living the the jungle can suffer a lot.

Just catch the cow while he's sleeping.

Even a relatively unfit individual with a spear / knife would be able to catch & kill a wild cow without a problem.

You don't try to run them down; you hide next to the waterhole and spear them when they come to drink. Man uses his brain to outsmart them.

I'd take a cow out way easier than a chicken.

You just wait til it's about to rain - the cow lies down, then you run up and stab it...job done.

A chicken would jump all round the place. :o)
