The HPL #063, named for Dave, is one of those products we thought others could use to achieve their own dreams.

The Nathan HPL #063 pack is referred to as a “racing pack”. Don’t let this put you off. I use it for hiking and rock scrambling. The suspension works great and the waist belt effectively transfers weight to your waist. Each side of the belt sports a zippered pouch which is great for things such as cell phone and camera. And there are mesh drawstring pouches on each shoulder strap for quick access to snacks. When the hydration bladder is full, the pack has a tendency to pull off your shoulders making the strap going across your chest vital. This strap stretches (as do the connection points for the shoulder straps). This stretch helps the pack ride more easily and thus more comfortably. The fabric of the pack is lightweight and it remains to be seen how well this will hold up.

My one complaint is the access to the main compartment. The minimal product instructions do not reveal how to gain access – it took me a while to figure this one out. It is a pull apart affair – I suppose this is part of the “racing” set-up. This closure tends to slide over the aluminum frame and open on its own – I have not found a way to insure that it stays closed – perhaps a Velcro modification. Since I don’t tend to have the pack upside down, I have not lost anything due to this defect. However, I do a lot of bushwhacking and find all sorts of debris will enter this open compartment. If not for this problem, I would give this product five stars.

used this pack twice so far for day hiking. lightweight. lots of external pockets which are handy, esp the ones on the waist. rolled access of the main compartment takes some getting use-to but no problem so far, though wish there are more than one main compartment. bladder it came with was flimsy so sub’d with my 2L camelbak bladder – a little too long for this pack but works ok. my chief complaint is the exoskeleton keeps popping off (luckily only at home when i am packing. didn’t do so on the trail.) had to use some force to push the rod back into it’s slots — not sure if this only happens with mine??
